As you may know by now, on Tuesday August 2, Instagram unveiled its new “Instagram Stories” feature. “Stories” is Instagram’s harsh uppercut that leaves Snapchat down for the count and users wondering if they will get up before the count ends at 10!
Completely unexpected, Instagram, with no holds barred, completely imitated (ripped off) Snapchats entire platform, and they did it as an Instagram enhancement. You can still use Instagram the way you always have, but now, users get the best of both worlds with “Stories” being a featured element at the top of your newsfeed.
What makes the move SO bold is that Instagram’s CEO, Kevin Systrom, seems to acknowledge that they completely “borrowed” from Snapchat by admitting, “They deserve all the credit”. Instagram Stories works exactly like Snapchat, and some users feel (especially the adults) without all of the hassle.
Systrom, in discussing Instagram’s mission with the “Stories” enhancement stated, “Our mission has always been to capture and share the world’s moments, not just the world’s most beautiful moments. Stories will alleviate a ton of the pressure people have to post their absolute best stuff.”
Some of us remember back in 2013 when Mark Zuckerberg offered to buy Snapchat for $3 billion dollars, and Snapchat kindly said “no thanks”. Now with this, I wonder how many Snapchat execs are thinking they should have taken the offer.
