I LOVE the movies! I mean, not just watching movies, but truly enjoy the movie going experience – going to the theater, grabbingsnacks, and watching ALL of the upcoming trailers. I am one of those people that will clap or boo at a movie trailer. LOL. Even while I worked at the studios (20th Century Fox, Warner Bros.) and lived and breathe films, I still would go to the theater almost every week.
Recently, I went to see “Captain America: Civil War”, and of course, thoroughly enjoyed the movie. However, what I was even more excited to see was the trailer for the upcoming Marvel movie Dr. Strange, which will not come to theaters until Friday, November 4, 2016! In true Marvel / Superhero fashion, they are building up the anticipation of this movie for the next 5 months.

Dr. Strange (2016) | Marvel
OMG, so the reason I am SO excited about this movie is that is not your every day Marvel superhero flick. It’s not the light-hearted, fun, sarcastic Marvel superhero movie that we’re used to (think any Marvel movie with Robert Downey, Jr.). While these movies are fun and always crowd pleasing, there is something so dramatically different with Marvel’s Dr. Strange, that I can’t wait to see.
Dr. Strange (aka Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange) is a former neurosurgeon turned into one of the world’s most powerful sorcerers. According to Wikipedia, “Strange was created to bring a different kind of character and themes of mysticism to Marvel Comics”.
Benedict Cumberbatch is Dr. Strange in the upcoming movie. Also starring in the movie are Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and one of my new favorite actors, Chiwetel Ejiofor. Scott Derrickson is the film’s director, and looking at his background, we’re definitely in for a much darker Marvel superhero than we’re used to seeing.
Imitation is the best form of Flattery
In looking at the trailer, you can see how this film is moving in a different direction than other Marvel movies. This “Dr. Strange” seems to be a mix of Christopher’s Nolan The Dark Knight Trilogy films (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises), Christopher Nolan’s Inception, and a little bit of the Matrix all mixed up into one – not only in filmography, but even with the current music used in the trailer.
Author’s note, I am a HUGE Christopher Nolan fan. With that being said, if this movie is a homage to Christopher Nolan’s method of superhero storytelling, that makes me even more ALL IN!
Theme’s such as “Forget everything you think you know..” and an existence of an alternative reality, seems extremely similar to Inception – even down to the manipulation of cityscapes. (INSERT PIC HERE).
There’s also the mentor / mentee relationship of Tilda Swinton’s character (The Ancient One) and Dr. Strange, very similar to Morpheous and Neo from the Matrix. The Ancient One says to Dr. Strange, “You know what I see in you… Possibility” and then we transition into a martial arts scene. Hmmm….
Dr. Strange seems to take some of my favorite scenes and themes from these other movies and use them to help introduce us to Dr. Strange. I for one can’t wait to see it. I’ll be sure to post my official review!
